jonah arrives in london
A northern bottle-nosed whale swam past the houses of parliament this morning. An epic animal disturbingly out of place against an iconic background, it feels like an early scene in a Hollywood disaster movie. (One about global warming...?)

I thought the whale was more like a piece of marginalia in a medieval manuscript. I can't help but wonder how John Dee would have glossed its significance had it appeared under the first Elizabeth's rule...?

You're absolutely right - though, come to think of it, John Dee's reading of portents and the role of that ominous scene early on in the disaster movie are quite close. I was also reminded of the whole trope of adynata/impossibilia - the fishes in the trees and all that. The time is out of joint.

On a different note, welcome back aboard the good ship LJ!
